I’msohonored.Ineverexpecttherearesomanypeoplecomingheretolistentomytalk.AndwhenIsittingthereIfeelsoimportant.Thankyou,thankyouverymuch.BeforemytalkIwouldliketoaskhowmanypeopleherehaveusedAlibabaservices.Good,notmany.[Laughs].AndhowmanyofyouherehaveneverbeentoChina?Neverbeen,neverbeentoChina.Good,thankyouverymuch.

Well,20yearsagoIcametoAmerica.MyfirsttriptoAmerica,toSeattle.BeforethatIlearnedsomuchaboutAmerica,frommybooks,frommyteachers,frommyschool,andmyparents.AndIthinkIknowenoughaboutAmerica.ButwhenIcametoAmericaIthoughttotallywrong.AmericaisnotwhatIlearnedfromthebooks.AndinSeattleIfoundtheInternet,andthenIcamebackandtellmyfriendsthatI’mgoingtoopenacompanycalledInternet.Iinvited24ofmyfriends,hadatwo-hourdiscussion.Andfinally[unintelligible00:01:19]wehadavote.23ofthemagainstme.“Forgetaboutit.There’snosuchkindofnetworkcalledInternet.Don’tdoit.”There’sonlyonepersonwhosaid“Jack,Itrustyou.Idon’tknowwhatthatis,butifyouwanttotryit,goahead,tryit.Becauseyou’restillyoung.”AtthattimeIwas30yearsold.

SoIstartedmybusiness,withoutknowinganythingaboutcomputer,withoutknowinganythingaboutbusiness.Istartedmyfirstcompany,mywifeandIandaschoolmate.Weborrowed[start]fromUS$1,000westartthebusiness.Itwassodifficult.Icalledmyselflikeablindmanridingonthebackofblindtigers.Jumpingaroundforthepast20yearsIsurvivetoday.Forthefirstthreeyearslifewasreallybad.IrememberItriedtoborrowUS$3,000fromthebanks.IttookmethreemonthsaskinganyfriendsIknowtoborrowthemoney[unintelligible00:02:22].Stillfailed,cozverybodysaid“Jackistellingalie,becausethere’snosuchnetworkcalledInternetin1996.”

Sooneday,later1996,ChinawasconnectedtotheInternet.Iinvitedtenmediafriendstomyapartment.IwanttotellthemI’mnottellingalie.ThereisanetworkcalledInternet.Wewaitedthreehoursandahalftoseethefirst–todownloadthefirstpicture.Andpeoplesaid“Isthatthinggoingtowork?”AndIsay“Yeah,it’llwork,butnottoday.Intenyearsit’llwork.”ButatleastitprovedthatIwasnottellingalie.

Irememberwhenwetriedtohelpoursmallbusinesstosellonline.Nobodywanttosellbecausenobodycometobuy.Sofirstweekwehavesevenemployees,webuyandsellourselves.Thesecondweeksomebodystarttosellonawebsite.Webuyeverythingtheysell.WehavetworoomsfullofthingsweboughtforNewYear’s,[allgarbage]forthefirsttwoweeks.Inordertotellpeoplethatitworks.Itwasnoteasy.Since1995to1999wefailed.Wegonowhere,ourbusiness,becausenothingwasready.In1999Iinvited18friendsofminewhocametomyapartment.Wedecidedtodoitagain.Wecallthename.AndpeoplesaywhyAlibaba?WebelieveInternetisatreasureislandwhichopenssesameforsmallbusiness.AndweusedAlibababecauseit’seasytospell,easytoremember.Andwewanttofocusonhelpingsmallbusiness.

Becauseatthattimewesee[unintelligible00:04:26]commerce[withthe]Americane-commercetheyfocusonhelpingonbigcompanies,they’refocusingonhelpingbigcompaniestosavethecost.WebelievedChinawedon’thavealotofbigcompanies,wehavesomanysmallbusiness,andsmallbusinessit’ssodifficultforthemtosurvive.IfwecanusingInternetasatechnologytohelpsmallbusinessit’llbefantastic.SowestarttosayifAmericaisgoodathelpingbigcompanies,justlikeAmericaisgoodatmakingbasketballweshouldplaypingponginChina,weshouldhelpthesmallguys.Andweshouldnothelpingsmallguystosavecost,becausesmallbusinessknowhowtosavethecost,butsmallbusinessshouldlearnhowtomakemoney.Soourbusinessisfocusinghelpingsmallbusinesstomakemoneyonline.

Andwewanttomakethecompanylastfor102years.Andpeoplearecurious–why102years?BecauseAlibabawasbornin1999,lastyearwehad–lastcenturywehadoneyear,thiscentury100years,nextcenturyoneyear.102acrossthreecenturies.Wegiveacleargoaltoanyemployees.Don’tsaywearesuccessful,nomatterhowmuchmoneyweraised,nomatterhowmuchmoneywemake,nomatterhowmuchwehaveachieved.Don’tforgetwewanttolive102years.Now,16yearspassed,wehaveanother86yearstogo.Becauseinnext86years,ifanytimewediewe’reneversuccessful.WhenIheardthisclubis108yearsoldIwassurprisedandshocked.There’ssomuchwecanlearnfromthat.

Well,todaynobodybelievedthatAlibabacouldsurvive,becausepeoplesay“Youare[free],you’retiny”and,youknow,andespeciallywhenwetalkabout–whenweIPO’dpeoplesay“Ah,youareAlibaba,youaree-commerce.You’relikeAmazon.”BecauseinAmericanpointofviewAmazonprobablyistheonlybusinessmodelfore-commerce.Butno,wearedifferent.ThedifferencebetweenusandAmazonisthatwedonotbuyandsell,butwehelpsmallbusinesstobuyandsell.Wehave10millionsmallbusinessonoursitebuyandselleveryday.Andwedonotdeliverourpackages,although–ourselves,thoughwehavemorethan2millionpeoplehelpustodeliverover30millionpackagesperday.

Wedonotownwarehouses,butwemanagetensandthousandsofwarehousesforothersmall,mediumsizeddeliverycompanies.Andwedonotowninventories,butwedohavemorethan350millionbuyers.Wehavemorethan120millionbuyerscomingtoshopeverydayonoursite.Andalso,wesell–ourrevenuelast–oursaleslastyearwereUS$390billion.Andthisyear,possibly,wearegoingtobebiggerthanWalmartglobally.AndWalmartmanage–thatsizeofbusinesshavemorethan2.3millionpeople;wegrowfrom18peopletotoday34,000people.

AndthedifferencebetweenAmazonandustheotherisAmazonisashoppingcenter.Becauseheree-commerceiscommerce,inChinae-commerceisalifestyle.Youngpeople[unintelligible00:08:08],theyusinge-commercetoexchangeideas,theycommunicate,theybuildupthetrust,theybuilduparecord.It’sjustlikeStarbucks–younevergotoStarbuckstotesthowwonderfulcoffeeis.It’salifestyle.AndthisishowInternete-commerceischangingChina.

Andwhatwefeltproudofisnothowmuchthingswesell.Isaidthisyearwe’llbebiggerthanWalmart–yes,weareproud.WeknowinfiveyearswewillsellUS$1trillion.Thisismygoal,whichwethinkpossiblywewillmakeit.Weareproudofthatbutwearemoreproudbecausewecreatedirect[andindirect]job,14millionjobsforChina.Andwe’vecreatedjobsinthecountryside.Wecreatedalotofjobsforwomen.Over51percentofthepowersellersontheInternetarewomen.

Sowefeelsoproudofthat.Andpeoplesayokay,nowAlibabadidthat.What'syournext?What'syourfuturecauseyouareeverywhere.We,80percentofthebuyandthesellonlinearecreatedbyourcompany.Ourfutureisthatwehavetofocusonglobalizingourbusiness.It'snotonlysellmorethings.Wewanttomake,toglobalizetheinfrastructureofeCommerce.WhyInterneteCommercegrowsofastinChinathanintheUSA?BecausetheinfrastructureofcommerceinChinawastoobad.Notlikehere.Youhave[Click]Motors.Youhavealltheshopsoffline,Walmart,Kmart,everythingeverywhere.ButinChinawehavenothingnowhere.

SoeCommerceintheUSisadessert.It'scomplementarytothemainbusiness.ButinChinaitbecomesthemaincourse.Wecreatedtheinfrastructure.Sowethinkifweglobalizeourinfrastructure—thepayment,thelogisticscenter,thetransparentplatformallaroundtheworld.Helpingthesmallbusinessaroundtheworldtoselleverywhere.Helptheglobalconsumerstobuyeverywhere.Ourvisionisintenyearswewillhelptwobillionconsumersintheworldtoshoponlineanywhereintheworld.You'reshoppingonlinewith72hoursyou'llreceivetheproduct.AndanywhereinChinayoushoponline,youwillreceivetheproductswithin24hours.Andwethinkourglobalizationisstillfocusedonhelpingsmallbusiness.Andhelpingthemtodobusinessinthemostefficientways.AndwethinkthatwewillhelpanothertenmillionbusinessonoureCommerceplatform.

Wewillempowerthem.We'llgivethemthetraffic.We'llgivethemthepaymentsystem.We'llgivethemthelogisticssystemsotheycandobusinessanywhereeasilyandquickly.Andwewillhelp.Wewillhave40percentofourbusinessoutsideChina.TodayweonlyhavetwopercentofourbusinessoutsideChina.Sopeoplekeeponasking,nowyouarebig.Youraisedthatmuchmoney.What'syourplayinAmerica?Peoplesaywellareyougoingtocome?WhenareyougoingtocometoinvadeAmerica?WhenIgoingtocompetewithAmazon?WhenIgoingtocompetewitheBay?WellIwouldsayweshowgreatrespectforeBayandAmazon.ButIthinktheopportunityandthe,thestrategyforusishelpingsmallbusinessinAmericagotoChina,selltheirproductstoChina.

TodayinChina,themiddleclassforChinaisalmostthesameastheAmericanpopulation.AndwethinkintenyearsitwillbemorethanhalfabillionChinesepeoplewillbemiddleclass.Thedemandingformiddleclass,thedemandingforgoodproducts,goodservicewassopowerful,sostrong.AndIthinkChinatodaycannotaffordthegoodproducts,goodservicetothem.AndthennextisthatChinahasbeenfocusedonexportinginthepast20years.AndIthinknextten,ten-twentyyearsChinaweshouldbefocusingonimporting.Chineseshouldlearntobuy.Chineseshouldspendthemoney.Chineseshouldbuyalotofthingsfromglobally.AndIthinkthatAmericansmallbusiness,AmericanbrandedproductsyoushouldusetheInternet,gotoChina.

Past20yearsbigcompaniesofAmericaisalreadyalloverChina.Butit'sthegreatopportunityforusingtheeCommerceforsmallbusinesstogotoAmerica.InthepastyearswehavehelpedalotofAmericanfarmerssellingthingstoChina.ForexampletheSeattlecherries,youwillneverbelievethattheambassador,theAmericanambassadortoChina,hecametoussay,JackcanyouhelpustosellthecherriesinSeattle.Isayhowcanwesellcherries?Thecherriesstillonthetrees.Andwestartedplaceorder,80,000familiesbookedtheorder.Andwhenwegottheorderweship,wepickupthecherriesandshiptoChinawithin24hours80,000families,160tonsofcherriesweresold.Andlastyearwesoldover300tonsofcherries.AndIdon'tknowwhat'sthisyearabout.

WealsohelpedAlaskaseafood.WehelpedCanadatosellthelobsters.Thelobsterwesoldprobablytenyearstheycannotsell.AndwealsohavealotofAmericanbrandedcompaniesusingoursitetosell.Costcothecompany,theysold600tonsofnutsonoursiteforthefirstmonth.Andforthefirstmonththey'reusingAlibaba6.5millionUSdollars.SoIthinkifwecanhelptoselllobsters,ifwecanhelpsellthecherries,whywecannothelpthesesmall,mediumsizecompaniestoChinausingoursystem?SothisiswhatIwant,andalsoIwanttotakeonedayforexampleNovember,November11th,the[Singles']Day.Wemakethatashoppingday.Lastyearforthatdaywesold9.7billionUSdollars.Andforthefirstminuteshoppingwehave24millionpeoplerushedinforthefirstminute.Andthisyearweguessthenumberwasscary,somypurposecomingherethatweneedmoreAmericanproductstoChina.

Wehaveahungry100millionpeoplecomingtobuyeveryday.Sothisiswhywecomehere.Wenotcomeheretocompete.Wecomeheretobringthesmallbusiness.Myvisionisthatinten,twentyyearsanywhereyoubuyanywhere,sellanywhere.PhilippinepeoplecanbuysalmononNorway.NorwaypeoplecansellthingstoArgentina.ArgentinacanbuyandselltoChina.ThisishowtheInternetisgoingtochange.AndlastlyIwanttosaywehavechangedtheChina.Wefeelproudofthat,andwethinkthatthechange,thepowerofchangeissopowerful.Thefirstrevolutionoftechnologywehavethe,theorganizationofbusinesscalledafactory.AndhadourfirstWorldWarbecauseofthestrengthofthearmsandmuscles.Thesecondrevolutionenergy,wehavetheorganizationcalledcompanies,andhavethesecondWorldWar.

ThistimeInternet.Thedata,andIthinkwehaveanewbusinesscalledplatform.AndthethirdWorldWarisgoingtohappen.Andthiswarisnotbetweennations,thiswarweworktogetheragainstthedisease,thepoverty,theclimatechange.AndIbelievethisisourfuture.Thehumanbeing,thenationsshallunitetogether.Relyontheyoungpeopleusingnottheguns,usingcomputers,usingthedatatosolvethehumanproblem,solvethesocietyproblems.AndthisiswhatI'mpassionateabout.It'snotaboutthemoney,it'saboutdreams.It'snotonlythetechnologychangetheworld,it'sthedreamsyoubelievethatchangetheworld.Andweknowtheway,thewayisnoteasy.AsIwastoldinthepast20yearsdoingInternetbusinessinChina,todayisdifficult,andtomorrowismuchmoredifficult.Butthedayaftertomorrowisbeautiful.Mostpeopledietomorrowevening,ifyoudon'tworkhard.Thankyouverymuch.
